BROOKLYN, NY- The nypost.com reports that a motorcyclist died after colliding with a car in Brooklyn on Saturday, October 6, 2018. The victim was a 39-year-old man.

Motorcycles put operators at an increased risk of death or injury than other types of motor vehicles. But there are important steps that motorcyclists can take to reduce their chances of being involved in a devastating collision. Some of the safety measures have to do with having the proper equipment and bike. Motorcyclists should know how to handle their motorcycle and avoid buying something that is too powerful for their skill level or one that doesn’t properly fit them. Another good investment is anti-lock brakes. Bikes with anti-lock brakes are safer because if a rider stops abruptly on a bike without this feature, he or she can end up losing steering control. Anti-lock brakes avoid this problem and can prevent skids and crashes.
Helmets are still one of the most important pieces of safety equipment for motorcyclists. Riding without a helmet creates a 40 percent increase in the biker’s chance of suffering a deadly head injury. It is also important to wear protective clothing.
Motorcyclists should also drive defensively. As the smallest vehicles on the road, motorcycles do not fare well in crashes with other vehicles. In the majority of crashes between motorcycles and other vehicles, the other driver is at fault, but the motorcyclist suffers for the driver’s mistake. It is best to be cautious and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
