BROOKLYN, NY- Nbcnewyork.com writes that a collision that took place in Brooklyn injured five people, including three pedestrians. The crash took place at Bedford Avenue and Campus Road close to both Brooklyn College and a local high school campus.
The collision occurred earlier this morning. Some of the injuries were considered serious. All five of the victims were taken to the King’s County Hospital for treatment. The authorities have not yet reported the identities or ages of the victims or the nature of the injuries they sustained.
Video from the scene shows three ambulances and a vehicle that had apparently struck a light post. Images from a helicopter showed debris on the road and sidewalk.
New York City is working to improve road safety and to reduce the number of people killed in vehicle accidents. The Vision Zero program, which Mayor de Blasio has championed, has a stated goal of reducing traffic fatalities to zero by the year 2024. While pedestrian deaths dropped initially, the total number of vehicle-related fatalities increased in 2018 and is projected to go up again in 2019.
The Vision Zero initiative is meant to cut down on the number of accidents through better-designed streets, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and education. However, the plan seems to have lost momentum. Cyclists, in particular, argue the roads are not safe for them. Many of the safety advocates in the city report feeling drained and burnt out after pushing for change and seeing the city face setbacks rather than progress. Representatives for Vision Zero are saying that progress will not always be linear, but that the plan is working. It is clear that the city has more to do if it plans to reach its goals.
