BROOKLYN, NY. – (brooklyndaily.com) According to an online news report from brooklyndaily.com, a bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle May 10 in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn.
A male bicyclist was riding on Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge toward 72nd Street. At the intersection with 73rd Street, a woman struck the cyclist with her car as she was attempting to cross Ridge Boulevard toward Colonial Road. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found the cyclist unconscious and unresponsive. He reportedly suffered trauma to his body and was transported to Lutheran Hospital nearby.
The bicyclist has not been identified but is reportedly in critical condition. The driver of the car has also not been identified, and no charges have been filed against her. She was not arrested at the scene. Local police are investigating the incident and have not released additional information at this time.
According to a Bicycle Crash Data Report from the New York City Department of Transportation, 1,827 bicyclists were injured in 2016 in crashes involving motor vehicles. In that year, nine bicyclists died from vehicle-related crashes. Out of all of the geographical areas studied by the New York City DOT — Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island — Brooklyn was the site of the most injury-causing crashes to bicyclists. The next closest was Manhattan with 1,328 injured bicyclists and two bicyclist deaths in 2016. Staten Island saw the fewest vehicle-related bicyclist injuries, with 72 in 2016, leading to one bicyclist’s death that year.
