BAY RIDGE, NY- According to brooklynreporter.com, a cyclist suffered severe injuries after he collided with a vehicle in Bay Ridge on the morning of May 10, 2018. The cyclist, a 29-year-old man, was traveling north on Ridge Boulevard when he crashed with a car that was heading west on 73rdstreet. The driver of the vehicle was a 63-year-old woman.
The cyclist was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn for treatment of severe bodily trauma. The driver was brought to the same hospital to treat facial injuries. The accident highlights concern that locals have been expressing over the lack of safety on their streets. Two weeks prior to this accident, a 10-year-old boy was hit by a car at an intersection that locals have argued was dangerous for years.
Justin Brannan, a Councilmember, attended a rally on May 6th that focused on pedestrian safety in the area. He said that the Department of Transportation needs to take actions to make the area safer before another tragedy happens.
Local residents say the area is full of speeding drivers that create risks for pedestrians. John Tomac, who lives near the site of the crash, says that the drivers at the intersection often fail to yield to pedestrians. He says he was almost hit by a driver who was rushing to get into an open parking spot.
Another local, Jean Beeks, stated that she frequently sees cars traveling too fast in Bay Ridge and that cars roll through stop signs regularly.
Maureen Landers, who is a member of Bay Ridge Advocates Keeping Everyone Safe (BRAKES) expressed frustration with the fact that these accidents continue to occur, and people act surprised instead of taking steps to change the situation.
A representative from Transportation Alternatives, Dulce Canton, stated that her group has been to Albany to lobby for safety measures to be taken in the area, including the addition of speed safety cameras in school zones.
