BROOKLYN, NY- The brooklyndaily.com reports that a drunk driver drove into pedestrians and two cars at the intersection of Farragut Road and Flatbush Avenue on April 13that 8:42 p.m. The collision caused eight people to suffer injuries, three of which were serious.
The driver, who was operating a Mercedes, is said to have been speeding when he crashed into a BMW that was stopped at a traffic light. The impact caused the vehicle to slam into three pedestrians in the street and another who was using a payphone at the time.
The BMW was pushed into a Honda that was stopped behind the BMW at the light.
Two of the pedestrians were severely injured, including the person who was at the pay phone. Both were taken to Kings County Medical Center. The driver of the Mercedes was seriously injured as well, suffering a fractured neck. The driver is being treated at Maimonides Medical Center. The drivers of both other vehicles and the other pedestrians were injured and also taken to Kings County, although their injuries were not life-threatening.
The driver of the Mercedes refused to take a breathalyzer after the accident and was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Drunk driving is one of the main causes of fatal car accidents. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), nearly one out of every three traffic-related fatalities are the result of drunk drivers. In 2015, drunk drivers caused more than ten thousand deaths. Deaths from drunk driving occur at a rate of about one every 51 minutes.
The costs stemming from drunk drivers in America amount to over $44 billion per year.
