The Mercedes entered a parking lot on Myrtle Ave. at about 9 p.m. The driver drove the vehicle in reverse and slammed into one car, then drove forward and hit the second vehicle, and pinned two pedestrians. The driver fled down the street and then smashed through a fence and entered another parking lot. He proceeded to hit a car in the second lot as well.
Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries, and two other individuals were injured but refused medical attention. The driver was arrested following the accident. Police suspect that the man was driving while intoxicated.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percent of people who drive drunk in New York is lower than the national average. Still, between 2003 and 2012, 3,752 people died in drunk driving related accidents. The frequency of drunk driving and alcohol-related traffic fatalities has been declining in recent years, but about one out of every three people killed in a traffic accident involve a drunk driver.
There are many laws in place that are designed to deter people from getting behind the wheel when they have been drinking and for punishing people who are caught driving drunk, but some people feel that the laws are not doing enough. A report published by the National Academies of Science and Engineering and Medicine recently proposed additional laws and changes, including lowering the legal limit from .08% to .05%.
