BROOKLYN, NY- Jdjournal.com reports that the 44-year-old woman who drove into pedestrians in Brooklyn on March 5th, 2018 will face multiple charges. Dorothy Bruns, from Staten Island, will face charges for criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, assault, and also for reckless driving and running a red light.
The tragedy took the lives of two young children, including the 4-year-old daughter of Broadway star and Tony Award winner, Ruthie Ann Miles. Along with Miles’ daughter, Abigail Blumenstein, Miles’ friend’s 1-year-old son, Joshua Lew, was also killed. The boy’s mother, Lauren Lew, was also struck in the crash and was hospitalized as was another male pedestrian.
Miles, who was pregnant at the time, was also stuck, but her unborn child was reportedly not harmed.
Bruns was interviewed at the scene of the crash. She claims not to remember hitting anyone. According to her account, she swerved to avoid hitting a car, and then woke up sitting behind the wheel but did not know that she had hit anyone.
Based on Bruns previous driving record, Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke out to say that Bruns should never have been permitted to drive. Her records indicated that she had previous violations, including for speeding near schools and running red lights. In total, she had more than 12 moving violations.
Miles is best known for her roles in “The Americans” and for her award-winning role in The King and I.
Following the tragic accident, Go Fund Me pages were started for both Miles and Lew.
New York City is making efforts to reduce the number of pedestrians killed or injured in the city where currently, a pedestrian is seriously injured or killed at a rate of about one every two hours.
