BROOKLYN, NY- Newstimes.com reports a woman from Brooklyn, NY was killed in an accident early in the morning of Tuesday, May 29, 2018, when the car she was riding in collided head-on with a semi-truck.
The accident occurred at about 3:05 a.m.when a 2015 Nissan Versa was traveling west on the eastbound shoulder of I-691. The victim, a 35-year old, was a passenger in the Nissan. The driver who had been traveling the wrong way on the highway has been identified as 36-year-old.
The Nissan collided head-on with a tractor-trailer driven by 54-year-old man was killed in the collision, and victim suffered injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash.
The eastbound lanes of I-691 were closedduring most of Tuesday mornings commute as a result of the collision.
Wrong-way drivers can cause severe and devastating accidents because the speed of the vehicles is multiplied by the fact that they are traveling towards each other. About 300 to 400 people die in these types of collisionsevery year in the United States, which means wrong-way driving fatalities account for only about 1% of all traffic accident deaths.
However, when vehicles are involved in wrong way crashes, the likelihood of someone being killed in the collision is somewhere between 12 and 27 times greater than it is in other kinds of collisions.
Studies have indicated that a large number of wrong way accidents involve drivers using alcohol or drugs. A study conducted by the National Center forBiotechnology Information indicates that about 58% of wrong-way driving collisions involve alcohol or drug use. The rate of alcohol-impaired driving in fatal wrong-wayaccidents is about two times as high as it is for other deadly crashes. Most of these accidents happen between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m.
How Do I Get My Police Report?
Within hours of an arrest or accident, a police report is generated by the officer tasked with hanling the incident. However, until the case is fully wrapped up and charges are filed, it is difficult to access the whole police report and you’ll only be able to see the “public portion” of the report which withholds information until the case is completely closed.
