China Boycotts Unapproved Agrisure Viptera Corn Seed, Farmers Lose Revenue
According to The Des Moines Register, U.S. corn exports to China were boycotted in February 2014. The genetically engineered seed was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2010 and sold to farmers starting in 2011. This engineered corn was found in several U.S. corn exports to China in November 2013; the genetically engineered corn had not been tested or approved in China at this time.
Switzerland-based Syngenta is the largest crop chemicals company in the world. The company operates in over 90 countries and generates over $15 billion a year.
Reportedly, over 131 million bushels of corn were rejected. The National Grain and Feed Association estimates that the U.S. corn industry lost between $1 billion and $3 billion due to the ban. Because the boycott affected all corn products, farmers who did not plant the Agrisure Viptera corn were affected. Farmers say that Syngenta risked their livelihood by selling the genetically modified seed to a country where it was not approved. Even though China ultimately approved the MIR 162 seed in December 2014, this does not change the fact that farmers lost money.
