When Hair Care Products Causing Hair Loss. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating claims that Wen Hair Care, sold by Hollywood hairstylist Chaz Dean, is causing hair loss. Over 21,000 women have filed a class-action lawsuit against Wen and Guethy-Renker, the products’ distributor.
One consumer described that her scalp tingled when the hair product was applied and that when she brushed her hair, the hair would come out of her head and bald spots appeared on her scalp. She also complained of itching on her scalp and when she scratched, it, the hair would rip out from the root.
In December 2015, the customer watched News Channel 8 in Florida, and their news report seemed to solve the question of what was happening to her hair. She was both shocked and relieved to hear that she was not the only one experiencing mysterious hair loss while using Wen products.
Women from all over the country were reporting that they, too, experienced drastic, sudden, and massive hair loss. She recently received a letter from the FDA reiterating that the agency is investigating 21,000 complaints across the United States from customers who have used Wen products.
Testing Ingredients for Beauty Products
The multi-billion dollar cosmetics industry is largely unregulated. There are several members of Congress working to increase the power to the FDA to test ingredients in beauty products and to recall those products deemed unsafe.
When known celebrities including Brooke Shields, Alyssa Milano, and Angie Harmon appear in televised infomercials and appear to endorse Wen Hair Care products, the consumer is led to believe the product is safe and effective.
Skin is the largest organ of the body and it is necessary to be educated, protected and confident in the products made available and marketed to the public.
