Despite allegations of sexual abuse, the Southern Baptist Convention ignored them for years

Southern baptist sex abuse allegations
According to an investigation by the Houston Chronicle, leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention hid reports of sexual abuse for over 20 years, routinely silencing abuse survivors. Moreover, the leadership ignored repeated calls to stop predators and refused to institute reforms recommended by experts to protect children.
The investigation was requested by the SBC church delegates in the summer of 2021. The 400-page report was released on May 22, 2022.
The church’s investigation followed the 2019 release of an extensive investigation by the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News
According to the Houston Chronicle, Johnny Hunt, a Georgia preacher and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, was accused of assaulting a woman in 2010, shortly after completing his presidential term. Guidepost investigators found the woman credible in her claims. They found that Johnny Hunt, who was elected president on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, did not seem credible.
