Urgent Recall Alert: Power Banks Sold by Costco Pose Fire Hazard
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent recall for approximately 350,000 power banks distributed by Costco. These power banks, manufactured by Ubio Labs, pose a significant risk as they are prone to overheating and subsequently catching fire.
Reports have emerged detailing instances of these power banks igniting. Disturbingly, three such incidents have been documented, one of which occurred onboard a flight. This in-flight fire incident led to four cases of smoke inhalation and caused minor burn injuries to a passenger.
These battery packs are identifiable by their black color and have the model number “PWB1071” distinctly printed on the backside. For those who have purchased these products, the Costco item numbers found on the packaging are 1314518 for the single pack and 1265470 for the double pack.
In terms of availability and price points, the single charger pack was retailed between March 2019 and December 2020 at a price of $32. On the other hand, the double packs were available from September 2018 through December 2020, priced at $40.
The CPSC has issued clear instructions to individuals who possess these power banks: cease using them with immediate effect. For refunds or additional queries, customers can directly contact Costco.
To reach out to Costco, customers can Costco between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT from Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT during the weekends. Additionally, a live chat service is available from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. PT during weekdays and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT over the weekend.
For those who own these power banks or are aware of someone who does, it is crucial to act swiftly and ensure that the product is no longer in use to prevent potential hazards.

- Physical Injuries:
-
- Burns: Direct contact with an overheating or ignited power bank can result in burns of varying degrees to the skin.
- Smoke Inhalation: If the device catches fire, especially in a confined space, individuals may inhale toxic smoke, which can lead to respiratory issues and other health complications.
- Eye Irritation: The smoke or potential chemical emissions from a burning power bank can irritate the eyes, leading to temporary or prolonged discomfort.
- Property Damage:
-
- Fire Damage: A power bank that ignites can set nearby objects or materials on fire, potentially leading to significant property damage or even structural fires.
- Smoke Damage: Beyond the immediate vicinity of the fire, smoke can cause discoloration, odors, and damage to walls, ceilings, and personal items.
- Water Damage: If a fire suppression system or sprinklers are activated because of a power bank fire, this can result in water damage to electronic devices, furniture, and other possessions.
- Emotional and Psychological Impact:
-
- Trauma: Experiencing a sudden fire or smoke incident, especially in personal spaces like homes or cars, can be traumatic and may lead to anxiety or fear around using similar devices in the future.

Filing a lawsuit in cases like the recall of potentially hazardous products, such as the Ubio Labs power banks, can be a way for affected consumers to seek justice and compensation for damages and harm they have endured. Here’s why a lawsuit might be considered and the types of damages that could be pursued:
Reasons to File Your Lawsuit:
- Compensation for Damages: A primary reason to file a lawsuit is to obtain financial compensation for direct and indirect losses caused by the faulty product.
- Holding Companies Accountable: Filing a lawsuit can ensure that companies are held responsible for the safety and reliability of their products. This can also act as a deterrent, making businesses more careful in the future.
- Raising Awareness: Legal action can draw attention to potentially dangerous products, making other consumers more vigilant and informed.
- Ensuring Regulatory Action: A lawsuit can prompt regulators to take more stringent actions against companies, leading to better industry-wide safety standards.
- Personal Justice: For many, a lawsuit provides a sense of personal justice and closure, knowing they took steps to address the harm they experienced.
Types of Damages That Could Be Pursued:
- Compensatory Damages: These are intended to restore the injured party to the position they were in before the harm occurred. They can include:
-
- Medical Expenses: Costs associated with treating injuries, such as burns or smoke inhalation.
- Property Damage: Costs to repair or replace property damaged by the faulty product.
- Lost Wages: If the injury caused the person to miss work.
- Pain and Suffering: Economic compensation for physical pain and emotional distress caused by the incident.
- Punitive Damages: These are awarded in cases where the defendant’s actions were especially reckless or malicious. They are intended to punish so severely that the wrongdoer does not commit similar behavior in the future.
- Loss of Consortium: If the harm has adversely affected the relationship between a married couple, compensation might be sought for the loss of companionship, affection, and other intangible elements of the marital relationship.
- Wrongful Death: If the faulty product resulted in a fatality, the family of the deceased might pursue damages for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and future earnings.
- Product Replacement or Refund: In some cases, plaintiffs may seek the cost of replacing the faulty product or a full refund.
- Incidental and Consequential Damages: Costs that are a direct consequence of a product defect, such as the cost of buying a temporary replacement.
