What Does Teprotumumab (Tepezza) Treat?
Patients who suffer from Thyroid Eye Disease, also known as TED and Rundle’s Curve, are frequently prescribed Tepezza. Tepezza is only given to patients through intravenous therapy. Thyroid Eye Disease is a severely disfiguring and debilitating eye disease that can lead to blindness. The medical condition is caused by muscle and fatty tissue behind the eye becoming inflamed. When the tissue behind the eye becomes inflamed, the eyeball is pushed forward, causing the patient’s eye to bulge outwards (proptosis). Proptosis s several severe symptoms, including eye pain, light sensitivity, difficulty closing the affected eye, and double vision. Although Thyroid Eye Disease is a rare medical condition, affecting one-quarter of people suffer from thyroid dysfunction, and half of the people also have Grave’s Disease.
Tepezza is the brand name for teprotumumab, which is an intravenous prescription medication that treats the symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease. Teprotumumab is a monoclonal antibody that helps block excessive immune responses that can cause eye tissue swelling. Tepezza is only available as an intravenous (IV) infusion therapy. Thyroid Eye Disease patients receive a sequence of infusions over several months.
On January 21, 2022, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved Tepezza as a treatment for Thyroid Eye Disease. Tepezza was approved based on the results produced by two studies that showed improvement in adult patients who have Graves’ Disease diagnosis and Thyroid Eye Disease. Tepezza is the only drug approved for that has been FDA approved for TED treatment. The manufacturer of Tepezza, Horizon Therapeutics, announced that Tepezza sales in the first three quarters of 2022 were 37% greater than in 2021.
Tepezza was created by Horizon Therapeutics PLC. Horizon is based in Ireland, with operations in Dublin, Deerfield, Ill. and Rockville, Md. Horizon develops medicines for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. On December 12, 2022, Amgen Inc. agreed to acquire Horizon for $27.8 billion.
What Are the Negative Side Effects of Tepezza?
According to aaojournal.org, the reported side effects of Tepezza include hearing impairment, muscle spasms, nausea, alopecia, diarrhea, fatigue, hearing impairment, and hyperglycemia. According to an article published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, August 2022 edition, one study showed Tepezza could cause tinnitus and/or permanent hearing loss. In that study, 22 of 27 patients who were taking Tepezza developed hearing damage after an average of 3.8 treatments.
