Ephedra Manufacturers Lawsuit. Parker & Waichman, LLP announces that it has been retained by individuals and/or their estates who have been injured by products containing the herb Ephedra, also known as Ma Huang. The firm plans to file claims against Ephedra manufacturers over the next few months. Ephedra has been associated with serious life threatening side effects including hemorrhagic strokes and heart complications. Several months ago, the FDA required manufacturers to include new warnings on the packaging of Ephedra products informing consumers of the potentially life threatening side effects of the products.
Ephedra has been used as the active ingredient in many popular supplements including: Xenadrine RFA-1, Metabolife, Stacker, Hydroxycut, TrimSpa, and Ripped Fuel. Recently the Congressional General Accounting Office (GAO) also indicated that Ephedra may be the cause of serious side effects, including: insomnia, seizures, strokes and death. The GAO noted that these risks appeared more common in people under 30 years of age. Several state health organizations have stated that Ephedra products pose a clear danger to the public and urged the FDA to ban the sale of Ephedra products. Additionally several states have filed claims against Ephedra manufacturers claiming these manufacturers fraudulently advertised their products and endangered the health of their citizens.
Jerry Parker Esq., partner of Parker & Waichman, commented, “For years the companies that manufacture products containing Ephedra have claimed that these products were safe and effective. The manufacturers argued that Ephedra products were similar to vitamins, and were not subject to FDA regulation. This lie was told to prevent the FDA monitoring the efficacy and side effects of Ephedra products. This lie has been told for too long, and we are encouraged to see the FDA and other federal and state agencies respond to the growing number of victims of these dangerous products.”
