Elmiron® Vision Loss Lawsuit Filed in the State of California
Our attorneys at Parker Waichman LLP filed the suit on behalf of Joanne Jackson for San Diego, California. According to our firm’s investigation of Ms. Jackson’s injuries and subsequent filing of our client’s lawsuit,
- Ms. Jackson has been a long-time user of Elmiron®,
- she was prescribed and took Elmiron® to treat interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome),
- she was not warned of potential vision loss risks,
- she was not advised to have ophthalmologic monitoring prior to taking, while taking, and after discontinuing Elmiron®,
- and she sustained severe complications with Elmiron®.
Ms. Jackson is suffering serious complications irreversible retinal damage caused by pigmentary maculopathy. She has lost her vision due to the severe side effects associated with Elmiron® (pentosan polysulfate sodium). The case (“Jackson, et al. v. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., et al., Docket No. 20CV1266 JM BLM.”) has been filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.
Parker Waichman LLP is seeking monetary compensation on behalf of our client, Joanne Jackson, for pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical expenses, loss of wages, and loss of earning capacity. In our complaint, our firm alleges that defendants Johnson & Johnson, Bayer Healthcare, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and as well as many other corporations associated with the development, production, marketing, and sale of Elmiron®, neglected to warn, educate, advise or otherwise inform Elmiron® users, potential users, physicians, and U.S. government regulators about the severe eye damage risks associated with Elmiron®. These risks include maculopathy, retinal damage, impaired vision, and the need for medical, ophthalmological testing, and monitoring. Our firm’s lawsuit complaint also shows that early clinical studies of Elmiron® in California, necessary to receive FDA approval, failed to prove that Elmiron® is an effective treatment for interstitial cystitis. Additional Elmiron® efficacy studies administered following those earlier clinical trials also confirmed that Elmiron® was not more effective than a placebo in the treatment of interstitial cystitis.
Attorney Jerrold S. Parker, our firm’s founding partner, has fought for drug and product safety for several decades. Attorney Parker has litigated drug injury cases in courtrooms throughout the United States. According to Mr. Parker, the damage caused by Elmiron® is the most severe he has ever seen.
In an article posted on July 8, 2020, on PRnewswire.com, Mr. Parker was quoted, “Sadly, we are now seeing many Elmiron® users who are facing serious, irreversible vision issues and even blindness as a result of the use of this drug and may have very limited, if any, efficacy,” according to Mr. Parker in an article posted on PRnewswire.com on July 8, 2020.
