Study Uncovers Ibuprofen Hospital-Acquired Kidney Injuries in Children
Hospital Ibuprofen Kidney Injury Lawsuits
USA – A news article published on moms.com reports on a recent study that has linked ibuprofen use in children with severe kidney injuries. Ibuprofen is typically not the first choice for parents to help their children recover from pain or fever. However, ibuprofen brands like Motrin and Advil last longer than aspirin-based pain and fever relievers.
According to a research study headed by Licong Su from the National Clinic Research Center for Kidney Disease in China, the team of researchers examined medical treatment plans for over 50,000 children admitted at a hospital. The researchers discovered that ibuprofen is the most prescribed anti-inflammatory drug in the world. The team also discovered that there haven’t been many large clinical research studies evaluating ibuprofen’s safety and the drug’s effect on the kidneys.
Therefore, a large-scale research study was conducted to determine if there is a causal link between “ibuprofen given to children and hospital-acquired kidney injury.” The research study, which JAMA Network published, showed that 11% of the children in the study were given ibuprofen, and 6.9% of the study’s participants developed kidney maladies during their stay in a hospital.
The research team at the National Clinic Research Center for Kidney Disease in China stated that the study results should warn doctors of prescribing ibuprofen to children, especially if the young patients are medically fragile or suffering a serious illness. The researchers also advised that if a child is prescribed or given over-the-counter ibuprofen, the child’s kidneys should be monitored. The research study does not provide detailed answers as to how kidney injuries occur, but only that the injuries occur.
