Delaware Sues Opioid PharmacyDELAWARE- Delawareonline.com writes that Delaware’s lawsuit against pharmacies began on October 24, 2018. The lawsuit was filed by the state’s Attorney General, Matt Denn earlier in 2018. The lawsuit aims to recover millions of dollars that the state has spent on costs associated with the opioid and heroin epidemic.

The defendants in the lawsuit include drug manufacturers, drugstores, and distributors. Each of these entities is alleged to have flooded the state with opioid drugs. Between the year 2007 and 2016, 694 people died in the state from opioid drug overdoses.

The companies are still arguing that they did nothing wrong or illegal and are fighting to have the case dismissed. The defendants state that the complaint does not specifically name how the companies contributed to the epidemic and failed to state how the companies furthered the distribution of the drugs through the state.

Lawsuits are mounting against pharmaceutical companies across the country. Some major corporations have paid out millions in settlements over allegations that the companies actively misled the medical community and consumers.

In Canada, plaintiffs reached a $20 million settlement over claims that Purdue did not warn about OxyContin’s dangers and addictive properties.

Delaware has not stated a dollar amount that the lawsuit is seeking. The complaint does seek to recover the $100 million in costs for criminal justice, social services, education, and healthcare, all of which have been impacted by the opioid epidemic.

The pharmaceutical companies pushed prescription painkillers which caused many Americans to become addicted to opioids. When prescription drugs started facing more control, many people resorted to heroin, which could be obtained for a lower cost.
