Plavix Lawsuits Due To Serious Side Effects. Parker Waichman LLP filed three lawsuits this week in New York State alleging the blood thinner Plavix caused serious stomach bleeding, and in one case, a cerebral hemorrhage that ultimately proved fatal.
All three lawsuits were filed with the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York, and name Bristol -Myers Squibb Company and Sanofi-Aventis U.S., L.L.C as defendants.
Two of the lawsuits were brought on behalf of Ohio men, who suffered gastrointestinal hemorrhaging after taking Plavix. The third alleges a man from Washington State died after suffering a brain bleed after using Plavix. That individual had been using the drug for less then a year when he ha cerebral hemorrhage.
According to the complaints, users of Plavix are at a greatly increased risk of serious, dangerous, and potentially fatal side effects including heart attack, stroke, internal bleeding, blood disorder and/or death.
Among other things, the lawsuits allege that Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi-Aventis negligently and/or fraudulently represented that Plavix had been tested and was found to be safe and effective for its indicated use.
The complaints further charge that the companies hid their knowledge of Plavix side effects. Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi Aventisare also accused of have falsely touting Plavix as being more effective and safer in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes compared to a less expensive daily aspirin regimen.
Plavix, a blood thinner known generically as clopidogrel, was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 for the prevention of heart attack and stroke. By 2005, Plavix was the sixth top selling drug in the U.S. and the Defendants enjoy annual sales of Plavix totaling 3.8 billion dollars, the complaints state.
