UNITED STATES – As reported in an online article published by www.yahoo.com, many women experience breast implant illness that has unpleasant and concerning symptoms which may be alleviated by explanting (removing) the breast implants.
Breast implants are used for a variety of reasons ranging from cosmetic to medically necessary. In many cases, women who have previously had breast cancer and mastectomies choose to have breast implants to help them look as much as they used to as possible. However, breast implants can cause some patients to experience illness and discomfort.
One breast cancer survivor with implants described her breast implant illness symptoms as brain fog, memory loss, hair loss, insomnia, pain, and heart palpitations. The woman, who spoke before the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stated that she felt significant improvement in her symptoms after having her breast implants removed. While some doctors do not believe such quick relief is possible, the woman is adamant that removal or “explanting” of the breast implants made her feel significantly better.
Breast implant illness is a separate and distinct condition from breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), which is a rare form of cancer linked to certain textured breast implants manufactured by Allergan. The symptoms of BIA-ALCL include swelling, pain, and skin irritation near the implant site.
Allergan has issued a global recall of its BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders (most recently in the United States) following more than 500 reports of BIA-ALCL in women with textured breast implants. Additionally, 33 women have died from the rare form of cancer, and most of the reported cases of BIA-ALCL are linked to Allergan implants. While the FDA asserts that the potential link between Allergan’s textured breast implants and BIA-ALCL is not fully known, there are enough cases of BIA-ALCL to prompt Allergan to issue a full recall of the breast implants.
