Have you or a loved one suffered serious injuries from a da Vinci Surgical Robot? The da Vinci Surgical Robot has been associated with serious injuries, including tears, burns and perforations to arteries and organs.
In some instances, these da Vinci Surgical Robot injuries have allegedly led to death. Yet despite its risks, the da Vinci Surgical Robot is increasingly used by hospitals to perform prostate removal hysterectomies and other surgeries, and was cleared by U.S. regulators in 2011 for use in gall bladder removal surgery.
On May 8, 2013, Intuitive Surgical issued an “Urgent Medical Device Notification” to its customers warning about a “potential issue” with some of the curved scissors used with da Vinci. According to the Notification, the EndoWrist Hot Shears Monopolar Curved Scissors (MCS) can develop cracks. These cracks “may create a pathway for electrosurgical energy to leak to tissue during use and potentially cause thermal injury.” In other words, a potential defect with one of these surgical tools may cause burns to a patient during surgery. The company noted one case of an injury associated with its MCS that was shown to have such micro cracks, although an electrosurgical leakage was not reported. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was alerted about the action.

The da Vinci surgical robot is manufactured by Intuitive Surgery
The da Vinci surgical robot is manufactured by Intuitive Surgery, and was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 for use in urologic, laparoscopic, gynecologic and non-cardiovascular thoracoscopic surgical procedures and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures. According to marketing materials for the device, the da Vinci Surgical Robot has been used in surgical procedures for:
- Kidney cancer and other kidney disorders
- Prostate removal
- Throat cancer
- Coronary artery disease
- Endometriosis
- Heavy uterine bleeding
- Obesity surgery
The da Vinci Surgical Robot has four arms: Three for surgical instruments, and a fourth with an endoscopic camera.
The remote controlled robot gives a surgeon more range of motion than the human hand, and promises less invasive surgery a smaller incision and reduced recovery time.
Several lawsuits filed against Intuitive Surgical over alleged da Vinci Surgical Robot injuries claim surgeons are not receiving enough training on the device – in some instances only a two-day course – before they use the robot unassisted.
da Vinci Surgical Robot lawsuits also allege that design flaws in the device, specifically its reliance on monopolar energy, increase the risk for surgical burns. This design can create an electrical current which jumps from the instrument to the body part, causing a burn. Other lawsuits allege that burns have occurred because of failure of the da Vinci Robot’s insulating barriers.
Many da Vinci robot injuries are not apparent during or immediately after surgery. This can delay treatment for internal injuries, and eventually lead to death.
