Unnecessary Infuse Spinal Surgeries. A Cincinnati spine surgeon, Dr. Abubakar Atiq Durrani faces federal charges that he persuaded patients to undergo operations they didn’t need.
He is accused of billing private and public health care benefit programs for the allegedly fraudulent services.According to reports, Durrani has a private practice with offices in Evendale and Florence, Kentucky called Center for Advanced Spine Technologies (CAST).
The U.S. Attorney’s Office complaint alleges that he was responsible for more than $7 million in Medical Part A payments to West Chester Hospital from 2010 to 2013, the Business Courier reports.

The litigation involves the Medtronic’s bone-growth product Infuse, used in spinal fusion surgeries. Lawsuits against Durrani allege he had a business relationship with Medtronic. Medtronic is the subject of hundreds of lawsuits nationwide accusing the company of marketing Infuse for uses not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Some research has linked the product to a slightly increased cancer risk. For much of the last decade, Medtronic has been embroiled in controversy over company-sponsored Infuse research that was found to overstate Infuse’s effectiveness while understating the risks and complications associated with the product.
