GREEN BAY, Wisc. — WBAY reports that dehumidifier manufacturers commenced product recalls because of defective, malfunctioning appliances that ignited numerous house fires. The hundreds of residence fires have cost consumers tens of millions of dollars in damage and repairs. Although listed for sale under dozens of names, the most common brand names for dehumidifiers are GE, Kenmore, Frigidaire, and Comfort-Aire, among others. However, there are only primary dehumidifier manufacturers currently operating. They are Gree, LG Electronics, and Midea. Given the risks involved with dehumidifiers when they overheat, consumers so do what they can to find out whether their specific model is part of a larger recall program.

The first step a consumer should take when trying to figure out if his or her dehumidifier was part of a recall is to locate the model number and manufacturer name. The website run by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission will have information to help you. The owner must stop running your appliance immediately if you see that it appears on a recall list. Then, the owner should contact the manufacturer to learn how to comply with the company’s recall program. The manufacturer or distributor might offer a free repair or could offer a full refund of the purchase price for the dehumidifier.

The appliance maker Gree recalled 2.5 million dehumidifier units on its own. Gree’s appliances appear as the names Gree, Danby, Fedders, De’Longhi, Fellini, GE, Frigidaire, Norfolk, Kenmore, Seabreeze, SoleusAir, SuperClima, and Premiere. Similarly, Midea recalled 3.4 million units sold as brand names Airworks, Arcticaire, Alen, Beaumark, ComfortAire, Coolworks, Continental Electric, Comfort Star, Crosley, Daewoo, Danby & Designer, Danby, Degree, Dayton, Excell, Diplomat, Edgestar, Fellini, Excell, Forest Air, GE, Frigidaire, Hanover, Grunaire, Homestyles, Honeywell, Hyundai, Ideal Air, Keystone, Kenmore (Canada), Kul Nantucket, Midea, Pelonis, Ocean Breeze, Perfect Aire, Polar Wind, Perfect Home, Processional Series, Premiere, Simplicity, Royal Sovereign, Sunbeam, Sylvania, SPT, TGM, Trutemp, Touch Point, Westpointe, Trutemp, Uberhaus, Winix, and Winixl.

LG sold 98,000 units at Walmart and Home Depot under the names Comfort-Aire, and Goldstar.

Anyone owning one of these brands must contact the manufacturer immediately.
