NEW YORK, N.Y. — According to a Fox News report, 91 people have died from kratom overdoes since the substance became a popular underground herbal tea. Until the results of a government report were released recently, the initial number of overdose deaths linked to kratom was 44. Kratom overdose deaths have been found in 27 states. The latest report about kratom overdoses was completed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Agency researchers looked back at least eighteen months and reviewed toxicology reports and death certificates to aid them in their pursuit to determine how dangerous kratom ingestion could be and its potential lethality.
Kratom is derived from a plant that typically grows in southeast Asia. The plants are harvested, and the leaves turned into pills and powders. Some believe that kratom has some type of magic power. They believe kratom can ease the symptoms of opiate addiction and withdrawal or the anxiety associated with opiate addiction. Taking kratom produces a euphoric high that is similar to a high opiates produce.
There is a close link between kratom and relief of pain caused by opiate use and withdrawal. Autopsy results in many cases showed only kratom was present in the victim’s system despite having been known as a heroin, fentanyl, or opiate user.
An overdose death from kratom ingestion is known as “acute mitragynine intoxication.” Kratom comes in various forms. Some people take it in pill form while others use it as a power. Additionally, kratom could appear in herbal tea that is particularly popular with the young teenage population. Parents should be aware of their child’s use of kratom and know that kratom can become addictive.
One lawsuit filed against SoCal Herbal Remedies claims that the company did not provide adequate warnings on its packaging concerning the potential for overdose. The lawsuit also alleges that SoCal Herbal Remedies did not test the product before selling it to ensure that it was safe for consumption.
