WASHINGTON, D.C. — According to an online report at WSBTV.com, ConAgra Foods voluntarily recalled many of its P.F. Chang’s foods sold in restaurants. ConAgra Foods does not produce food served to dine-in restaurant customers. ConAgra Foods warned consumers that numerous products have metal pieces found in some sauces. The metal fragments were found among sugar used to make P. F. Chang’s Home Menu foods. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall on its website on April 20, 2019. However, ConAgra Foods initiated the first recall of this product in July of 2016.
ConAgra Foods learned that metal fragments were found in the lots of sugar used to make some of the sauces for the P.F. Chang’s Home Menu foods. The metal fragments ranged in size from 2 mm to 9 mm. According to the FDA, metal fragments 7 mm or smaller which are dull and not excessively hard, can irritate the throats and stomach of people who eat the contaminated food. People who eat tainted food might feel a reflex to choke or experience some abdominal pain. ConAgra received no reports of any severe injuries or illnesses from the contaminated sugar.
ConAgra instituted this voluntary recall after one of its employees spotted metallic fragments flowing from the sugar lots produced by a ConAgra vendor into the P.F. Chang’s sauce. That happened on July 7, 2016, and ConAgra launched a recall of all products affected by that particular lot. On July 14, 2016, ConAgra’s sugar supplier informed ConAgra that additional lots of sugar were contaminated. Accordingly, ConAgra widened the recall of its potentially defective products.
According to ConAgra, only the P.F. Chang’s line of foods was contaminated and none of the other foods ConAgra manufactures were recalled by the company. All of the food products in issue were distributed in the United States, and all are exclusively P.F. Chang’s brand with the specific product names listed on the FDA recall website.
