NEW YORK, NY – According to Bronx.news12.com, Ford Motors is recalling hundreds of thousands of vehicles across the globe in order to replace the defective Takata airbag inflators that can cause explosions and shrapnel-related injuries and deaths.
In the United States, 782,000 vehicles were recalled. The recall is just part of a larger recall, which is the largest ever to take place in America.
Vehicles impacted by the airbag recall include 2010 models of the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, Ford Rangers from 2010 and 2011, Ford Fusions and Lincoln MKZs from 2010 through 2012, The Mercury Milan from 2010 and 2011, and Ford Mustangs from 2010 through 2014.
The recalls vary based on geographic regions. The defective inflators have caused 23 deaths worldwide, but no deaths or injuries have been reported in relation to the Takata airbags in the vehicles that are subject to this recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the recalled airbags can explode when they deploy if they are first exposed to heat and high humidity for a long period of time. The recall is massive and involves tens of millions of motor vehicles from many different manufacturers.
The NHTSA reminds owners of vehicles that may have Takata airbags that in most situations, the airbags function as normal and that these devices can save people’s lives and lower the risk of severe injuries. The risks affiliated with Takata airbags only impact a very small minority of drivers in limited circumstances. In the United States, 15 people died from defective Takata airbags, and another 250 or more individuals sustained related injuries.
