DETROIT- According to Westchester.news12.com, one million Toyotas have been recalled after the company discovered that the airbags could potentially fail to inflate in the event of a collision or inflate without a collision.
The recall applies to 17,000 Scions that are in the United States and which were manufactured from 2004 through 2006.
Vehicles in Europe and Japan were also subject to the recall. The models covered include the “Isis, Avensis, Avensis Wagon, Allex, Wish, Corolla, Corolla Spacio, Corollo Verso, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Runx, and Sienta.
The issue stems from an electrical problem that can short out causing damage to the system’s circuits. When the short occurs, the airbag warning lights light up, and it is possible for the seatbelt pretensioners and airbags to become deactivated. In other situations, the systems can deploy without warning.
Consumers in possession of the defective vehicles will be able to have their airbags replaced for free.
Airbag recalls have recently impacted nearly every car company. The Takata airbag recall has been referred to as the most complicated and the largest recall in history. Takata airbags presented a risk of explosion in an accident. The chemical used to inflate the devices, ammonium nitrate, can become unstable, especially in warm and humid climates. The result is an unstable airbag that can project out shrapnel when deployed. The defective airbags caused 15 deaths in the United States and 23 internationally, in addition to 300 injuries worldwide.
The recall on those devices was carried out in shifts and prioritized vehicles sold in places where the climate made the airbags more likely to cause injuries.
