The CDC e-cigarette update has confirmed over 800 cases of the mysterious e-cigarette illness across 48 states. The U.S. Center for Disease Control has recently released an update about the e-cigarette illnesses that are sweeping the nation. The CDC e-cigarette update has unfortunately brought more grim news as close to 1000 individuals have been hospitalized by what is either confirmed to be or very likely the mysterious e-cigarette illness.

Parsing the Facts of the CDC E-Cigarette Update

Much of the CDC e-cigarette update was a recap of what was already known. Over the past several months, hundreds of young, otherwise healthy e-cigarette users have begun to fall ill with almost identical respiratory distress. The average victim of this e-cigarette illness is a male under the age of 34. Many of these patients have used e-cigarettes to inhale nicotine and THC and have no preexisting conditions that would indicate sudden respiratory distress or failure.

The e-cigarette illness resembles a rare form of pneumonia in the way it affects patients’ lungs. Early symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pains, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

The new information in the CDC e-cigarette update is in terms of the number of victims and fatalities. On Sept. 26, the CDC reported that there have now been 805 confirmed or probable cases of the e-cigarette illness and at least a dozen people have passed away as the result of this disease.

The CDC e-cigarette update has described the countermeasures still being deployed, including the dispatching of over 100 doctors and investigators to assist in identifying the specific causes of the e-cigarette illness.

On a national and corporate level, entities have now begun to restrict or ban e-cigarettes. Michigan has become the first state to outright ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and San Francisco has become the first U.S. city to prohibit selling flavored e-cigarette fluids. Businesses have also issued moratoriums on carrying e-cigarette products including Walmart, Rite Aid, Costco, Dollar General, all of whom have pulled e-cigarettes from their shelves in early to mid-September.
