According to a news report published on mednews365.com, a new research study has discovered that approximately 33% of vape and e-cigarette users suffer symptoms typically associated with lung damage. The study also states that many of those with potential lung damage suffer one or more of the common symptoms associated with lung damage. The information contained in this study will be presented to the American Heart Association. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already stated that the agency plans to increase the amount regulations governing vape and e-cigarette products.

Medical scientists have connected five lung damage symptoms to what is identified as e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). These lung damage symptoms include:

  1. Chest pain
  2. Cough
  3. Nausea
  4. Shortness of breath
  5. Stomach pain

The vape lung damage study studied more than 1,400 vape and e-cigarette users for a full year. The study listed the products and devices used and had the participants report any symptoms. Fifty-five percent of the participants complained about having at least one of the five lung damage symptoms. One-third of the study’s participants listed symptoms that were associated directly with EVALI, the disease that was named following many people falling ill after vaping.

The study also discovered that e-cigarette users who used disposable e-cigarettes had a “lower rate of the symptoms.” This new data shows that the damage to the lungs is partly related to the ingredients used in the e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Several vape users try different vape products that contain ingredients that are not regulated, and they use vape devices that have not been tested.

The researchers were surprised to discover the strong connection between vape-related lung damage and flavored or “altered” vaping products. Those who used flavored vaping products or “altered” vape products suffered the most side effects, and the side effects were more severe and prevalent.

The frequency of symptoms reported shot up to about 70 percent if the user used e-liquid in their vape devices. The study also found that those who used refillable cartridges were 95 percent more likely to experience EVALI associated symptoms. Flavored cigarettes were also connected with a 71 percent increased probability of experiencing EVALI symptoms. The study has also found that 40 percent of vape users experienced EVALI symptoms if they mixed their own e-liquid vape oil. These results indicate that vape lung damage is more extensive than the EVALI outbreak in 2019, which was linked to vape juices containing vitamin E acetate and THC.

Medical researchers studying the effects of vape products continue to warn consumers, particularly teens and young adults, about the serious medical consequences of vape and e-cigarette products. This study highlights new data that proves the correlation between increased lung damage and using refillable vape cartridges. Teens are the largest consumer of flavored vape products. The National Youth Tobacco Survey of 2020, found that there were over 3.6 million teens and children using vape devices and four-fifths of those teens and children are using flavored vape and e-cigarette devices. Although the FDA has outlawed the selling of flavored e-cigarettes, the ban does not include disposable cartridges. Unfortunately, it will take many years for researchers to find a probable correlation between vaping and lung cancer or any other long-term disease or terminal health effects.
