Juul addiction lawsuits
September 9, 2019 – COLUMBUS, OHIO – According to an online news report by WBNS, the mother of two girls has filed a lawsuit against Hilliard Smoke House, its owners and Juul Labs. In the lawsuit’s complaint, the plaintiff alleges that her underage daughters became addicted to Juul’s nicotine JuulPods due to Juul’s internet marketing advertisements. The lawsuit alleges that the local vape shop permitted the children to purchase Juul products, although the children were only 13 years old. This vaping addiction lawsuit is one of several lawsuits that have been filed throughout the United States.
On September 12, 2019, USAToday.com reported that three separate lawsuits were filed in the state of New Jersey. According to the report, each lawsuit is alleging illegal marketing practices were used, and this lead to their use of Juul devices and ultimate their addiction to nicotine. One of the lawsuits cites a report published by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that reported e-cigarette usage amongst high school students climbed by 78% from 2017 to 2018. The FDA’s report also said that the percentage of high school students vaping rose from 11% to nearly 21% during the same 1-year time frame.
Juul vape pens consist of a two-part system. A vape pen or device to heat the vaping oil and a “JuulPod” that contains the “vape juice.” According to the American Lung Association website, Lung.org, Juul “does not make any nicotine-free pods.” Parents must understand that there is no difference between Juuling or using an e-cigarette. Also, each Juul pen contains the same amount of nicotine found in one pack of cigarettes. The American Lung Association also informs Juul and e-cigarette users that the aerosol-cloud made by Juul devices contain the same chemicals and carry the same dangerous health risks as combustible cigarette smoking.
Juuls, E-Cigarettes, and Vaping is Not a Safer Alternative to Smoking
One dangerous misconception about vaping is that vape aerosols are water vapor and this water vapor is harmless to the user. The trust is all types of “e-juice” are harmful whether containing nicotine or nicotine-free. The oils and flavoring chemicals using in “e-juice” are also considered hazardous to your health when inhaled. The American Lung Association states, “The aerosol inhaled from these products is often a mixture of harmful chemicals like nicotine, formaldehyde, and acrolein.”
A report produced and published by the United States Surgeon General reported several health risks linked to vaping which include but are not limited to:
- Brain development and neurological damage to children and teens.
- Strokes
- Heart attacks
- Pneumonia
- Respiratory failure
- Lung damage
- Cancer
