Vaping illness
(08/28/2019) NEW YORK — According to an online news report from the New York Times, public health experts and physicians are puzzled as to why there have been a flood of vape-related illnesses. Symptoms reported include dizziness, respiratory difficulties, and vomiting. In New York, there have been over a dozen new cases of vape-related illnesses and over 200 cases reported nationwide. In Illinois, public health officials reported the first adult vape-related death.
What is Causing the Potentially Fatal Illness?
Police have conducted numerous interviews with the families and friends of those admitted to hospitals around the country. Law enforcement and medical investigators believe the root cause of the sudden outbreak of vape illnesses is linked with counterfeit vials of THC vape oil that are contaminated with a toxic substance.
One 20-year-old man was rushed to the emergency room where he was placed on advanced life support machines to oxygenate his blood as doctors rushed to make a diagnosis and save the man’s life. The man’s doctors were perplexed when test results returned showing abnormal cells in his lungs. The doctors stated that these rare immune cells are typically associated with a fatal form of pneumonia that is typically found in elderly patients who “accidently inhaled droplets of mineral oils or other types of oil-based laxatives.” The treating physicians suspected that the young man’s lungs failed due to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, which was likely caused by vaping. The treating physicians advise the man’s parents that if there was no improvement over the next several days, their son may need a lung transplant.
How Can Vape Pens, E-Cigarettes or JUUL Devices Cause Injury?
Electronic cigarette devices are sold under various designs and brand names. However, these devices function in the same way. These vape devices burn a vaping liquid or oil made from propylene glycol, flavorings, nicotine, THC, marijuana, vegetable glycerin and other various ingredients. As the user inhales through the mouthpiece, the liquid is heated into an aerosol. It is believed that this mist or aerosol contains heavy metals and chemicals such as diacetyl which have been linked to severe lung diseases such as “popcorn lung.” In the 2016 U.S. Surgeons General Report named, “E-cigarette Use Among Youth and Young Adults” reported some of the compounds found in vape “smoke” contained organic compounds that are shown to cause cancer and other long-term lung diseases.
Do You Have a Claim?
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, vaping amongst teenagers and young adults has become a major health concern in the United States. Use of e-cigarettes, JUULs and vape devices amongst young adults and teens has grown over 900% in only four years. The report also finds that nicotine, an addictive additive, is harmful to adolescent brain development. The report also addresses the misconception that “vaping” is a safer alternative to tobacco. Vaping has been linked to serious injuries such as heart attacks, strokes, respiratory failure, pneumonia, cancer, popcorn lung and a host of other lung diseases
