31 States Have Reported Cases Of Eye Infections. According to the CDC, 31 US states have reported 102 confirmed cases of Fusarium Keratitis, an eye infection, plus another 81 cases that are still under investigation.
The states confirming the cases are:
AR, AZ, CA, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, NC, ND, NJ, NY, OH, PA, PR, TN, TX, and VT. States where all cases are under investigation include: IN, MN, NV, OK, OR, and RI.
Even though data on all confirmed cases is not yet available, here is CDC data on 58 confirmed cases:
Ever since the eye infection outbreak started, April 10, 2006, patients have reported using multiple products, made by Bausch & Lomb, Alcon, and Advanced Medical Optics, Inc.
The CDC says it is still too early to be sure whether this outbreak is due to a single product or solution.
50% – 60% of patients reporting eye infections have been using Bausch & Lomb‘s ReNu with MoistureLoc.
2.3 million contact lens wearers in the USA have been using ReNu with MoistureLoc. 11 million have been using MultiPlus.
As Fusarium keratitis is not a notifiable disease in the USA, it is unclear exactly how many cases there currently are throughout the country.
