Peanut Butter Are Being Recalled Due To A Contamination. Fort Wayne residents were turning in their peanut butter jars after a voluntary recall because of the possibility of a salmonella outbreak.
ConAgra Foods Inc announced Thursday a voluntary recall of jars of Peter Pan and Wal-Mart’s Great Value peanut butter. ConAgra is complying with the Food and Drug Administration’s investigation into a report that peanut butter from ConAgra’s plant in Georgia could be tainted with salmonella.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that there is a possibility that a salmonella outbreak of up to 300 people in 39 states could be linked to eating the peanut butter from the ConAgra factory. About 85 percent of the infected people said they ate peanut butter, and about a quarter of them ate it at least once a day.
Affected Product Code Begin With The Number 2111
Peanut butter with a product code on the lid beginning with “2111,” which denotes the plant where it was made, is affected. Anyone who has purchased Great Value or Peter Pan peanut butter with this product code can return the peanut butter to ConAgra for a refund. Leanne Beeching, the co-manager of Wal-Mart on Coldwater Road, said Thursday, “(Customers) are actually bringing (the peanut butter) in and returning it already.”
Meijer has removed all Peter Pan products from its shelves, not just the jars with the recalled product code. Stacie Behler, a spokesperson for Meijer said, “If you read the FDA’s press release, we are not really clear where the salmonella is coming from.”
None of the cases of salmonella, first recognized in August, have resulted in death, although nearly 20 percent of those affected went to the hospital.
The CDC is not sure that the peanut butter is what has caused the outbreak. ConAgra has tested its peanut butter for salmonella, and the results have come back negative.
Local Meijer, Scott’s Food and Pharmacy, and Wal-Mart stores are complying with the recall. Kroger could not be reached for comment.
