$1.8 Million Will Be Available To Remove Poisonous Lead-Based Paint From Austin Homes. More than $1.8 million will be available to remove poisonous lead-based paint from Austin homes, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, announced Wednesday.
Austin Neighborhood Housing and Community Development will receive the federal money for lead cleanup and for education to prevent childhood lead poisoning.
Nearly 1 million U.S. children between ages 1 and 5 suffer from lead poisoning, with higher rates among children living in older housing, according to statistics cited by Doggett’s office.
Poisoning From Chipping Lead Based Paint
The primary source of such poisoning is dust from peeling or chipping lead base paint or dust created during repainting or remodeling projects.
Mayor Gus Garcia says: “These funds will allow the city of Austin to once again be on the cutting edge of an important public policy and provide vital health care services to our citizens.”
The money is provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant Program.
