Rocket Fuel Ingredient Tainted Groundwater. Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation says it’s making progress preventing groundwater tainted with a rocket fuel ingredient from reaching Lake Mead.
The Henderson company says an ion-exchange process was expanded to more locations since a removal system was begun in April. It says groundwater contaminated with perchlorate is intercepted and channeled to tanks filled with a resin to filter out the perchlorate.
Blocking A Contaminated Groundwater
The company has also installed an underground barrier to block migration of contaminated groundwater toward Lake Mead, a reservoir for Nevada, California, and Arizona.
Perchlorate is an oxygen-rich salt used to boost rocket fuel performance. It’s also known to affect human thyroid glands.
Authorities say it got into the water supply as a result of Kerr-McGee operations in Henderson more than 40 years ago.
