Lockheed Settlement New Groundwater Wells To Replace Contaminated Water. The Planning Commission granted initial permission to construct three new groundwater wells to replace lost water production from a contaminated Texas Street facility.
The project site is located along the east side of Orange within the Upper Santa Ana River wash at the CEMEX mining and material processing facility.
The commission voted unanimously in favor of the project, which should supply enough water to replace supplies which came in contact with perchlorate in the groundwater.
New Wells As Part Of A Settlement
The new wells will be paid for through a settlement agreement reached with Lockheed Martin for $3.85 million, said Lonnie Young, of the Municipal Utilities Department.
The agreement with the aerospace company over damages from perchlorate, believed to have seeped into the groundwater from a former rocket fuel plant in Mentone was accepted by the council last week.
Water production from the Texas Street facilities, about 5,600 gallons per minute, has been reduced and will most likely stop entirely when construction of the new wells is complete.
Each 50-by-50-foot well will produce about 2,800 gallons per minute, or 4 million gallons per day, Young said.
The third well may be used as a backup or to supply additional water when needed.
