Officials Found Toxic Chemical In Water Wells. Federal officials found a toxic chemical in more drinking wells in the eastern Iowa town of Hills.
Last spring, 22 wells were found to be contaminated with perchlorate. The latest findings bring the number to 148.
The Environmental Protection Agency investigated after the chemical was found in the town a few years ago. Testing was done in May, and again this fall.
Perchlorate Is Used In Rocket Fuel
Perchlorate, which occurs naturally and is produced commercially, is used in rocket fuel, munitions, fireworks and fertilizer. It can damage the thyroid gland, disrupt hormone levels and slow brain development in infants.
The EPA is researching the history of the area to determine the source of the contamination.
Hills is about 10 miles south of Iowa City.
