Drunk driving is on the decline in the United States. Efforts to curb the dangerous behavior have made progress, and yet alcohol still factors into a large number of crashes every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 28 percent of all people killed in vehicle accident in the United States are killed in crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. In 2016, more than 10,000 people were killed in drink-driving accidents across the country.
These crashes are also extremely costly. The average annual cost of drunk driving accidents is over $44 billion.
When drunk driving tickets are compared to self-reported incidents of driving, it comes to light that only about one percent or less of all drunk drivers are ever caught and ticketed.
