According to an online news report posted on abc-7.com, a 21-year-old man from Port Charlotte, Florida, was tragically struck and killed as he was attempting to rescue accident victims. The fatal pedestrian accident happened on Wednesday evening along Interstate 75. The victim’s girlfriend reported that her boyfriend was an active-duty Navy airman.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal pedestrian accident happened when a pickup truck traveling along I-75 swerved off the interstate and struck the victim as he was attempting to assist accident victims hurt in a previous collision.
The previous accident involved an 18-wheeler and a car. A Charlotte County EMS technician stated that an automobile collided with a tractor-trailer truck on I-75 South by the Kings Highway exit at around 6:10 p.m.
The vehicles involved in this accident ended up against a guardrail in the left-hand lane. The Navy airman was not involved in this accident. He stopped his vehicle along the right shoulder of Interstate-75, and he ran across the interstate’s lanes to assist the motorists who collided into the median.
As the victim was assisting the motorists in the previous accident, and while he was on the left lane shoulder, the victim was struck and killed by a pickup operated by a 31-year-old man from Bonita Springs, Florida.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital to receive medical treatment for his severe injuries, according to law enforcement officers at the accident scene. The two people in the car were extricated because the car was trapped between a truck and the semi-truck. The two accident victims were transported to Fawcett Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.
I-75 southbound lanes were closed as the Florida Highway Patrol handled the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the collision.
