FORT MEYERS, FL- According to Wtxl.com, a state trooper sustained injuries when a vehicle struck his SUV which was stopped along the highway. The crash took place on Monday, November 5, 2018, on Interstate 75 close to Fort Meyers.
The trooper had pulled over to provide aid to a disabled vehicle. The trooper’s SUV was in the emergency lane and was flashing its lights. Before the officer exited his vehicle, another SUV swerved into the emergency lane in an attempt to avoid the slowing traffic. The trooper’s vehicle was rear-ended and crashed into the disabled vehicle that the trooper had pulled over to assist.
Both the trooper and the driver of the disabled vehicle were injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital.
Pulling onto the side of a highway can be dangerous, but there are times when you might not have a choice. If you are stuck with a disabled vehicle and have to stop in the shoulder, you should only exit if it is safe to do so, and you should only exit on the said away from traffic. Never turn away from the traffic flow. You should always keep looking for oncoming vehicles.
In many cases, the best thing to do is stay in the vehicle and wait for help. If you remain in your vehicle, you should keep your seatbelt fastened in case your car is struck by an oncoming vehicle. There are highway crews that can help stranded drivers. An emergency vehicle with flashing lights can help make you more visible to oncoming drivers and decrease the risks of being struck in an accident.
