Students Were Injured After A Drunk Driver Struck Their Car. Three Stony Brook University students suffered minor injuries after a drunken hit-and-run driver struck their car on September 12 on the Stony Brook campus, according University Police Chief Robert J. Lenahan.
The driver, Kevin Duponte, 23, of Palm Coast, Florida, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, Newsday reports. He was arraigned on September 13 in First District Court in Central Islip, New York.
Police said Duponte was driving a 2003 Dodge pickup truck when he crashed into a 2010 Toyota at the intersection of Marburger Drive and South Drive on the Stony Brook campus. Police say Duponte left the scene but was later spotted near Circle Road and Campus Drive.
A field sobriety test showed Duponte was intoxicated and he was arrested, Lenahan said.
Three commuter students were injured in the crash; their identities were not released, Newsday reports. The students were treated at Stony Brook University Hospital for undisclosed injuries. Duponte returns to court on September 20.
