Wrong way hit and run
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL- The tbreporter.com writes that a man in Palm Harbor suffered severe injuries in a crash this week on the Howard Franklin Bridge. The incident occurred when the 49-year-old victim was driving a pickup truck that collided with a tow truck. A passenger in the victim’s car was also injured in the crash. That individual was identified as a 25-year-old man from Lake Panasoffkee.
The driver in the other vehicle was identified as a 62-year-old man from Lutz. He also suffered injuries in the wreck, according to reports.
The incident occurred overnight when the tow truck was traveling northbound. The driver lost control while on the bridge and entered the shoulder of the road where it collided with the other truck. The pickup truck was parked at the time in front of a sign marking a construction lane closure.
The two trucks then drifted across the bridge until they came to a stop on the inside shoulder.
According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), there were 400,524 collisions in the state of Florida in 2019. Of that total, there were 2,966 fatal collisions resulting in 3,210 deaths. In addition to those killed, 254,277 people in Florida suffered injuries in car crashes in the Sunshine State last year.
Sadly, the number of people killed in Florida in 2019 was higher than the total number of fatalities in 2018. While Florida has seen an increase in deadly crashes, the United States as a whole saw the number of vehicle collisions drop between 2018 and 2019. Early estimates project a drop of about one percent in overall motor vehicle deaths nationally between 2018 and 2019.
