SARASOTA, FL – According to News-Press.com, a 23-year-old man from Alva was killed in a car crash in Sarasota, Florida. The collision took place in Sarasota on State Road 780 at a little after 10 in the morning.
One vehicle was traveling west when it slowed for a red light. The car behind that vehicle swerved in order to avoid striking the first vehicle as it slowed. The driver of the second vehicle, Tyler Mathew Peterson, lost control of his vehicle and struck the front car. The vehicle then collided with a support pole for a traffic signal.
Peterson died in the crash. The reports indicate that he was using his seatbelt. A passenger in the vehicle lived with only minor injuries.
Rear-end collisions are extremely common types of accidents. Many people have been in minor fender bender types of rear-end crashes, but some of these collisions can also be serious and deadly. Each year, around 17,000 people are killed in rear-end crashes.
One frustration factor in rear-end collisions is that they are highly preventable. In almost every case, a driver could avoid rear-ending other people by paying attention to the road ahead of them and seeing when a vehicle in front of them is slowing or stopping. Also, if drivers did not follow too closely behind other vehicles, they would avoid many crashes that involve not being about to stop in time.
While drivers often have the ability to prevent rear-end accidents, it is obvious that even good drivers have lapses in judgment and make mistakes. Vehicle technology has the ability to alert drivers when they are too close to another vehicle and can even apply the brakes when the vehicle gets too close, and an accident is about to take place. This technology could save thousands of lives every year, and yet it does not come standard in all vehicles despite efforts to make the technology a part of all new vehicles.
