Traffic accidents
TAMPA, FL – September 8, 2020 – According to an online news article posted on Wtsp.com, the number of motor vehicle accidents remain high in Tampa, Florida, even though there are fewer drivers out on the road than there would be in an average year. Over long weekends, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, the area saw an uptick in severe wrecks. Crashes involving teenage drivers also increased during the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” One safety group stated that teens have the highest rate of crash-related deaths out of all age groups and that traffic accidents are the main cause of death for these young motorists.
Part of the problem stems from the fact that teens are out of school during the summer months and are able to be on the road more often.
This year, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a drop in traffic as many people are avoiding their commutes. While the drop in traffic led some optimists to suspect that crash-related deaths would also decrease, the opposite has proven true for the Sunshine State. The Florida Highway Patrol reports a seven percent increase in such deaths. The problem appears to be at least partially caused by the fact that some motorists are using the light traffic to travel at high speeds or in reckless ways.
From January through April, police in the area around Tampa issued 350 tickets to drivers who were speeding at over 100 miles per hour. Road rage is also an issue many drivers are reporting. According to police, the best step to take if you see a driver engaged in aggressive behaviors is to pull over and call 911. Confronting a person driving in such a manner may only escalate the situation and lead to greater risks.
Police state that drivers in the area should simply remember the rules of the road and the safety measures that they were instructed to follow as new drivers.
