Florida has a poor record when it comes to traffic safety. Statistics indicate that the state is the third in the country when it comes to these tragic incidents. Some worry that infrastructure is part of the problem. Certain intersections tend to have higher numbers of fatal collisions suggesting that they are potentially more hazardous due to their design.
The dangerous locations are also spots where pedestrians face higher risks walking around or through intersections. Officials are looking to reverse the rising number of traffic deaths throughout the region are turning to “Vision Zero” for ways to make the roads safer. In Broward County, a “Vision Zero” initiative was instituted five years ago. While the data is incomplete, some believe that the early signs show improvement.
The best advice that safety experts can offer is to drive, bike, and walk defensively. Sadly, even responsible motorists and pedestrians are at the mercy of others on the road who may not share their caution. Alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving remain common and devastating problems throughout the Sunshine State.
