Middleburg woman killed in collision
MIDDLEBURG, FL – According to Firstcoastnews.com, a woman was killed in a single-vehicle collision on the Buckman Bridge at about 6:50 in the morning. The southbound left and left center lanes were closed following the fatal crash.
The victim was identified as Rashelle Shiloah Kirsch, 27. Kirsch was traveling southbound when she lost control of her vehicle and drifted over all of the lanes before smashing into a barrier wall. Drivers are being told to avoid the area and to anticipate traffic delays near the scene of the accident.
Many fatal crashes involve only one vehicle. These collisions are some of the worst on the road, and most of the time, they are completely avoidable. When a driver loses control of their vehicle it can at times be the result of icy roads and bad weather, but in the vast majority of these accidents, the driver was not paying attention to the road, was drowsy and possibly fell asleep, was drunk, or speeding. In many cases, a driver will start to veer out of their lane, and then realize it and overcorrect. This can cause them to lose control of their vehicle or in some instances, to flip the vehicle.
While drivers can take precautions to avoid these types of incidents, the reality is that many people will make driving mistakes at one point or another with sometimes tragic results.
The best way to avoid these crashes might be to stop relying on people to be responsible and attentive drivers and start focusing on technology, such as lane keeping technology, which exists in some vehicles. While self-driving cars are still prototypes, there are vehicles on the market that offer lane-centering or hands-free steering technology which could potentially cut down on the number of these types of accidents.
