Two vehicle collision in Naples, FL
NAPLES, FL – According to Naplesnews.com, two vehicles were involved in a fatal collision in Naples on Thursday, January 17, 2019. The victim, identified as Carole Bullis, 82, of Naples, was a passenger in a Lexus ES350. Another passenger and the driver in the Lexus sustained minor injuries.
The other vehicle was a Honda Civic driven by a 24-year-old man from Naples. The man sustained serious injuries in the crash.
The Honda was driving eastbound on Pine Ridge Road when it began to veer northwest and through the eastbound left-turn lane. Then the Honda hit a center median and a sign before it drifted into the westbound lanes. The Lexus was driving west, and the cars collided head-on.
Everyone in the vehicles had their seatbelts fastened at the time of the accident. Charges are pending in relation to the crash.
Head-on collisions can be deadly crashes even when vehicles are traveling at modest speeds. Studies have indicated that the chances of a person surviving a head-on crash are low if the vehicles are traveling at speeds above 43 miles per hour.
In many cases, these devastating crashes are the result of momentary and common lapses in focus on the part of drivers. For instance, a drowsy driver can veer over a center line if they shut their eyes for just a moment, and a driver who looks at their phone to check a text message can drift out of their lane before their eyes return to the road. When a vehicle enters the lanes in which oncoming traffic are traveling, accidents often happen so fast that no one has an opportunity to swerve, brake, or otherwise avoid the impact.
