Driver flees after striking a pedestrian
FORT MYERS, Fla. — A pedestrian was run down on State Road 80 and the driver who initially struck the pedestrian fled the scene. A second motorist hit the person who was lying in the road. However, that motorist turned around and came back to the scene to find the person on the ground according to winknews.com. Law enforcement investigators are asking the public for help. They have very few details of the fleeing vehicle at this time. Police say that a silver passenger car hit the pedestrian and drove away. The investigation continues. Troopers are calling the case a traffic homicide.
The deadly collision occurred at the intersection of Palm Beach Boulevard and Fairfax Drive in the Tice section of Fort Myers, Florida according to Florida Highway Patrol. Palm Beach Boulevard is known as State Road 80. WINK reported that a press release issued by the Florida Highway Patrol suggested that the victim was already lying in the road on Palm Beach Boulevard when the silver car ran over him. Investigators also say that the pedestrian was lying between the right travel lane and the right-hand turn lane when the first car hit him. It is unclear at this time whether additional cars hit the man or if it was only two. A witness interviewed by WINK who claimed to be the victim’s friend said that as soon as the first car hit him, he was on the ground. The female witness also said that she could not believe the man would attempt to cross the street without using a crosswalk.
Investigators have little information to focus on at this time. The witness said that the silver car hit the man and drove away from the scene. WINK described how the vehicle drove away from the scene as speeding. The driver of the second car who ran the man over immediately turned around and came back to the area to check on what the vehicle hit. That person remained on the scene and spoke with investigators.
Investigators seek the public’s assistance in locating the driver of the silver car as well as the vehicle used in the accident. Police request that anyone with information call Florida Highway Patrol or Crimestoppers.
