The FDA Finally Responds to Baby Food Lead Contamination Concerns

Baby Food Lead Poisoning Lawsuits
FDA – A news article posted on foodsafetynews.com reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is finally responding to the recent reports of toxic elements found in popular baby food products. According to the news reports, baby foods have been tested, and it was discovered many popular baby food products contained toxic elements, such as arsenic and lead.
The baby food report was issued on February 4, 2021, by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy. The report asked important questions about what could be done to eliminate or reduce toxic elements found in baby food products. The FDA said that the agency is aware of the heavy metals report, and the agency has been working toward resolving the issue using a “risk-based” strategy to prioritize the agency’s efforts.
The FDA stated that parents should understand that FDA routinely monitors levels of toxic metals and elements in baby food products. Additionally, the FDA monitors baby food products under the FDA’s manufacturer through targeted sampling assignments and compliance programs such as the Toxic Elements in Food program and Foodware and the Radionuclides in Food program.
According to the FDA, when toxic elements are discovered in food and present a health concern, the FDA takes actions to decrease these toxic substances’ levels. For example, the FDA has tested infant rice cereal since 2011, and the results of these programs have shown that manufacturers have made major progress in reducing arsenic in infant rice cereal products. The progress made was the result of FDA guidance at the industry level. Infant rice cereal is much safer than it was about ten years ago. The FDA expects that manufacturers will continue to decrease arsenic levels in infant rice cereal by implementing good manufacturing practices and emerging science.
The FDA also stated that the agency would continue working with its federal partners, industry leaders, consumers, and health advocates to reduce consumer exposure to toxic elements through the food they eat.
