Cheese Made By Queseria La Poblanita May Be Contaminated Clarita Queseria Queso Fresco “Fresh Cheese” made by Queseria La Poblanita, Inc., 216 E. 117th St., New York, NY, 10035 may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus and should not be consumed, warned State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. According to a recall alert posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration’s (FDA’s) website, an inspector from the Department’s Division of Milk Control and Dairy Services collected a routine sample on April 15, 2015. Testing by the New York State Food Laboratory found that the sample contained high levels of Staphylococcus aureus. Upon discovering these results, the manufacturer issued a voluntary recall.

According to the recall notification, rapid food poisoning symptoms usually arise from exposure to the bacterium, including nausea, vomiting, retching, abdominal cramping and prostration. Headache, muscle cramping and transient changes in blood pressure and pulse may also occur in more severe cases. The typical recovery period is two days, and all populations can become infected. While death is unlikely, staphylococcus aureus has in some cases been fatal in the elderly, infants and severely debilitated individuals.
The recalled fresh Spanish-style cheese was distributed to stores and delis in the metropolitan New York area. The product was packaged in 12 oz. plastic tubs with a label displaying a plant # 36/8585 and a product lot case of MAY 13, 2015.
