KENTUCKY- Reuters.com reports that a woman in Kentucky filed a lawsuit against the Brazilian company JBS SA’s United States arm after she was made ill by eating salmonella-contaminated beef. The lawsuit was filed in Arizona on Friday, October 5, 2018. The plaintiff was hospitalized as a result of the foodborne illness.
The lawsuit comes on the heels of a massive recall of ground beef produced by JBS. The company issued a voluntary recall of 6.5 million pounds of the product. The United States Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service later announced that the recall had been expanded to include a total of 6.9 million pounds of ground beef.
The plaintiff, Dana Raab claims to have bought the contaminated meat at Sam’s Club and used some of it to make meatloaf in September. Raab froze the remaining beef. Raab then became ill and was diagnosed with Salmonella Newport. The plaintiff was hospitalized for five days because of a blocked bile duct and severe dehydration.
Salmonella is a common form of foodborne illness that causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. The bacteria can be deadly for some, especially the elderly, young children, and individuals with weak immune systems.
The JBS outbreak reached 16 states and reportedly made 57 people sick. The number of people made ill by the outbreak could continue to grow. One issue with salmonella outbreaks is that the number of reported cases is often much smaller than the number of total cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are around 30 cases of salmonella that go unreported for every 1 case that is reported. Most individuals who contract salmonella do not seek medical attention or get tested to determine the cause of the illness.
